چکیده

[1] We have developed a semianalytic model for computing the photo-induced isotopic fractionation in simple molecules of interest to the atmospheric science community. The method is based on the Born-Oppenheimer approximation and the Reflection Principle. It has the main advantage of using commonly available input data, namely, the photolysis cross sections for the standard isotopologue/isotopomer and the ground state isotope-specific spectroscopic constants. The isotopic fractionation arises principally from the spectral shift induced by the small difference in zero point energy between isotopologues/isotopomers and the contraction of the wave function due to heavier isotope substitution. The latter effect dominates photolytic fractionation away from the cross section maxima. Our new approach is demonstrated with applications to the diatomic molecules HCl and HI, and the triatomic molecules N2O and O3. Agreement between the model and measurements is excellent. New modeling results for the fractionation of NNO in the stratosphere using the Caltech/JPL two-dimensional model are presented.

Photo-induced isotopic fractionation of stratospheric N2O

Context Abstract: N2O has been identi®ed in the Kyoto Protocol as one of the six greenhouse gases for which anthropogenic emissions should be regulated, however, regulation procedures may not be implemented until a wellde®ned N2O budget has been established. The measurement of N2O isotopic fractionation provides a potential means for constraining the global budget since biological and anthropog...

Revisiting the Cai Oxygen Isotope Anomaly

Motivation: Mass-independently fractionated oxygen isotopes in CAI [1] are widely assumed to be due to self-shielding (hereafter SS) of CO in early solar environments [e.g. 2]. However, the SS process necessarily leads to an unusual prediction that a mean solar oxygen isotopic composition differs from most of planetary bodies, but is close to a typical CAI oxygen. The latest results of the Gene...

Photo-induced fractionation of water isotopomers in the Martian atmosphere.

The history and size of the water reservoirs on early Mars can be constrained using isotopic ratios of deuterium to hydrogen. We present new laboratory measurements of the ultraviolet cross-sections of H2O and its isotopomers, and modeling calculations in support of a photo-induced fractionation effect (PHIFE), that reconciles a discrepancy between past theoretical modeling and recent observati...

Further Evidence for Chemical Fractionation from Ultraviolet Observations of Carbon Monoxide

Ultraviolet absorption from interstellar 12CO and 13CO was detected toward Oph A and Oph. The measurements were obtained at medium resolution with the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope. Column density ratios, N(12CO)/N(13CO), of 125 23 and 117 35 were derived for the sight lines toward Oph A and Oph, respectively. A value of 1100 600 for the ratio N(12C16O)/ N(1...

Note A model of carbon isotopic fractionation and active carbon uptake in phytoplankton

The carbon isotopic fractionation of phytoplankton photosynthesis ( p) has been interpreted by previous authors as inconsistent with active bicarbonate uptake. This interpretation contradicts the results of numerous physiological studies demonstrating signi cant active bicarbonate uptake in phytoplankton. Using a simple model of cellular regulation of carbon acquisition we show that an upward c...
